The  female Hairy Woodpecker leaves the nest as the male shows up with a bill full of flies. This was one of their "seamless" transitions.

Birds aren't always the graceful creatures we idealize them to be. The male Hairy Woodpecker returned to the nest while his mate was still inside. Note how the male's eye is closed; the female had just smacked him in the face with her right wing as she left the nest to make room for him.
